U.S. Won’t Supply Certain Weapons if Israel Invades Gaza City

President Joe Biden stated on Wednesday that the United States would withhold specific weapons and artillery shells from Israel if its military were to invade Rafah, a city in southern Gaza where over 1 million people seek shelter.

In an interview with CNN, Biden remarked that the administration would refrain from providing “the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities,” in the event of an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah.

While this stance marks a shift in U.S. policy toward the conflict, Biden assured that the U.S. would maintain support for Israel’s security, particularly concerning the Iron Dome defense system and its capacity to retaliate against attacks.

The decision to halt a planned shipment of offensive weapons, including 2,000-pound bombs, last week underscores this shift. Biden acknowledged concerns over civilian casualties resulting from the use of such munitions.

Reportedly, Israel expressed frustration over the halted shipment, emphasizing its military’s preparations for an anticipated ground offensive in Rafah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has underscored the military’s intention to enter the city, regardless of a potential agreement with Hamas.

Israeli demands to isolate Rafah from a ceasefire deal have complicated negotiations, with the government insisting on military operations in the city even during a ceasefire.

Biden reiterated his opposition to a Rafah offensive in discussions with Netanyahu, as outlined in White House readouts of their conversations.

Furthermore, Biden highlighted the administration’s engagement with Arab states regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. He mentioned the willingness of five Arab leaders to contribute to Gaza’s reconstruction and the transition to a two-state solution.

Regarding governance in Gaza, Biden clarified that the leaders would aim to “maintain security and peace” while establishing a credible and corruption-free Palestinian Authority.
