New York Investigates Trmpt Trial Judge After Alleged Unsolicited Advice from Real Estate Lawyer

An investigation has been launched by the state of New York into Judge Arthur Engoron following claims by a prominent New York City real estate lawyer, Adam Leitman Bailey, that he provided unsolicited advice to the judge. The probe comes after Engoron ordered former President Donald Trump to pay a $454 million judgment in March, prompting a flurry of controversy and legal maneuvering.

Trump, who has frequently criticized Engoron as ‘crazed’ and ‘corrupt,’ posted a $175 million bond to avoid asset seizure while he appeals the ruling. Bailey publicly stated that he spoke to Judge Engoron three weeks before the ruling, urging him to ‘get it right.’ However, Engoron’s spokesperson vehemently denied any improper influence by Bailey, stating that the decision was made independently by the judge.

The alleged conversation between Bailey and Engoron has raised concerns about potential violations of judicial conduct rules. The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct is reportedly examining whether Engoron’s actions breached any regulations regarding ex parte communications.

Ex parte communications, defined as conversations between a lawyer and a judge without the presence of other parties, are generally prohibited under New York State Rules of Judicial Conduct. While there is an exception for seeking advice from a disinterested expert, the circumstances of the alleged conversation are under scrutiny.

Christopher Kise, a member of Trump’s defense team, emphasized the importance of adhering to judicial conduct rules, stating that any violation could cast doubt on the integrity of the case. The investigation into Engoron’s conduct is expected to unfold over the coming months, potentially prolonging the legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Trump’s legal battle continues as he seeks to overturn the judge’s ruling that he lied about his wealth. The former president’s posting of a $175 million bond has temporarily halted efforts to collect the judgment, providing him with a reprieve as he pursues his appeal.

However, New York Attorney General Letitia James remains steadfast in her pursuit of the judgment, signaling her intention to seize Trump’s properties if he fails to comply. With the outcome of the appeal uncertain, the legal showdown between Trump and the state of New York is far from over, with significant implications for both parties involved.
